Recovering a message after part of it is destroyed

You store a message together with extra 'check' symbols computed from it, so that if some pieces are destroyed, the survivors still point to one possible original and rebuild it exactly. A QR code at its highest setting stays readable with about 30 percent blacked out. The same math, the Reed-Solomon code from 1960, lets a scratched CD play through.
