How bacteria become resistant to antibiotics

Bacteria do not learn to fight a drug. In any huge population, a few already carry random mutations that happen to survive it. The antibiotic kills the rest and leaves those few to multiply, so the whole population becomes resistant. It is evolution as a filter, not a plan, and it is why misusing antibiotics is dangerous.

The wrong mental model

People often picture bacteria sensing an antibiotic and cleverly adapting to defeat it, as if the germ studies the threat and toughens up. That is not how it works, and the truth is more unsettling.

Evolution has no foresight and no goal. It is a filter. Variation appears at random, the environment kills off what does not survive, and whatever happens to survive gets to reproduce. Nothing is trying to improve. The drug is simply the filter, and resistance is what slips through it.

How the filter works on a bacterial population

A single infection can contain billions of bacteria, and they are not identical. Random mutations, copying errors in their DNA, mean a handful already carry some trait that blunts a given drug: a slightly different protein the antibiotic targets, or a pump that ejects it. These variants exist before the drug ever arrives, purely by chance.

When you take the antibiotic, it wipes out the vast majority that are vulnerable. But the few resistant ones survive, and now they have the whole body to themselves, with their competitors gone. They multiply, and the next generation of the infection is dominated by resistance. The drug did not create the resistance; it selected for it.

Why misuse makes it worse

This is why finishing a prescribed course and not overusing antibiotics matters. Stopping early, or using antibiotics when they are not needed, hands the resistant survivors an easy win and speeds the filter along. Do it across a whole population and drugs that once cured routine infections stop working.

The World Health Organization ranks antimicrobial resistance among the top global health threats for exactly this reason. The same filtering process is visible elsewhere in nature on human timescales: Darwin's finches whose beaks shifted measurably during a drought, and peppered moths that darkened as soot stained the trees they rested on. Resistance is that same blind filter, running in a hospital.
